My sculptures seem to make themselves! I have no option. Art is a compulsion to me. I have spent my working life involved in children’s art – I value it highly. The best art is created either by the very young or by naive primitive tribal people. The more sophisticated society gets the more people seem to appreciate the rawness of creative art. In this computer driven age, traditional crafts are still appreciated. I play with clay; a lovely art form.

My gritty clay is very strong and heat stabilised to a high temperature – strong enough to withstand frost. This makes my sculptures suitable for either indoor or exterior display. I would like to think that the pieces I make have an ancient quality with a modern twist. The figures have a quiet strength – a calmness – as they never smile or show emotion, but have a serene attitude. Each piece is unique as it is coil built – keeping to natural finishes with oxides and slip colourings. My working drawings are combinations of many materials – whatever is at hand, often coffee or wine.
